US automaking giant, Ford Motor Co. recalled over 575,000 Ford Windstar minivans to fix problems encountered with the rear axle corrosion in the snowy, northern states of America.
Ford spokesperson said that Ford Windstars bought and/or registered between 1998 and 2003 in Delaware, Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Maine, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Massachusetts, Missouri, Minnesota, Ohio, N. Hampshire, N. Jersey, N. York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Rhode Island, Wisconsin, W. Virginia and Washington DC., have been recalled, reports The Detroit News.
These states fall under the America’s “Salt Belt,” and the rear axle corrosion problems in the Ford Windstars becoming imminent. Besides the 463,000 vehicles from the 21 Salt Belt states, about 113,000 Ministars from Canada also are recalled, Ford Motor Co says.
The problems with the corrosion-inflicted weakened rear axles were focus of investigation done by the American National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA); the investigation began in May 2010.
About 25% of the Ford Ministars driving at 40mph or more speed encountered axle failures and pose a great threat for dangerous accidents was the major finding of the investigation by the NHTSA.
