58 beached whales die on Karikari Beach in New Zealand

As many as 58 pilot whales belonging to one pod died after mass stranding along Karikari Beach in northern New Zealand.
Of about a pod of 70 whales that stranded on the beach, 58 are dead and the remaining of the pod battling for life; the whale rescue personnel are struggling to save the whales and put them back into the waters.
Whale beaching is a common sight along the New Zealand coastline as it happens to be the transit point of the Whales’ migration during summer to/from the Antarctic. Although scientists have no clues as to why the whales get stranded.
About 40 whale rescue volunteers are working round the clock to move the monstrous 3,300 pounds each weighing whales into the waters but have failed.
New Zealand has highest rate of whale and dolphin strandings, and deaths due to strandings.
