It’s now declared that Rio de Janeiro, Brazil will be hosting 2016 Olympics after a landslide victory against its closest competitor, Madrid, on Friday in the last round of voting.
Before that, the International Olympic Committee (ICC) members gave shock to one and all by kicking out Chicago, supposedly the favorite, in the very first round of the voting. Tokyo got the next call out and IOC had good support to Rio making it first ever city in South America to host the big Game. The final voting saw Rip edge out by 66 votes to 32 received in favor of Madrid.
Already Brazil is in preparations to host already preparing to host the World Cup Soccer 2014 and this winning only added to the joy of the people of Brazil and Rio in particular. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was seen in tears of joy as soon as the announcement was made by IOC president Jacques Rogge.
However, Chicago seemed to be shocked at the announcement and it polled just 18 votes in first round; despite great speeches on behalf of Chicago by the President Barack Obama and the First Lady Michelle Obama at the IOC session. In fact, Obama became the first US President to address the IOC session.
