Typhoon Fanapi hits Taiwan forcing thousands of evacuations

Tens of thousands of Taiwan residents were evacuated as strong Typhoon Fanapi struck southern part of Taiwan. The power and transport services disrupted as the typhoon flooded the island.
Typhoon Fanapi happens to be first major storm that struck the island in 2010 and after crossing Taiwan the typhoon reached Fujian province of China.
According to the Central Weather Bureau of Taiwan, the typhoon left 44 inches of rain in the southern part of Taiwan on Monday, September 20, 2010, and there is a forecast for more rains. TV footage showed water enundating streets to about 15 feet depth. Taiwan Military was deployed to rescue the trapped residents. Schools and offices remained closed.
About 10k residents from the vulnerable areas of the southern part of the island were evacuated. The international flights from Kaohsiung were suspended. There have been no immediate reports of casualties from the powerful Typhoon Fanapi.
