China announced today (September 29, 2009) that their space researchers completed 3D lunar mapping in the highest resolution ever possible.
The moon map comprised the entire moon surface and is based on the imagery information obtained from the CCD (charge-coupled device) stereo camera that was taken by the Chinese lunar probe vehicle, Chang’e-1.
The Chinese sent the lunar probe to the moon way back in 2007.
According to the lead scientist of the lunar probe team Liu Xianlin, the moon map could assist in study of the features, laws as well as information about how moon’s surface was created.
The 3-dimensional lunar images could shed light on understanding of the lunar geology and also the lunar evolution.
Researchers also believe that the 3D lunar mapping should be initiating other objectives for lunar probe associated projects in the future.
