Red Watch Program to counter binge drinking problem among college goers in US

A simple red watch could help counter binge drinking in colleges. Health advocates in US hope that a cheapie watch will not become a vogue of fashion but also counter problems of binge drinking in campuses.

The red watches; quite cheap, could indeed be great tools to address binge drinking of college students which has been plaguing many colleges in the United States.

According to estimates, about 80 per cent of collegegoers take alcohol, and the most recent statistics say that half of the alcohol drinkers actually are binge drinkers (taking 5 or more drinks in one go or say in two hours’ time in men and taking 4 or more in women). Most of the efforts taken by college administrations and government hitherto to counter the binge drinking problem have been bummers. But the Red Watch Program initiated at Stony Brook University intends to save lives of binge drinkers and its looks like doing good job so far.

The Red Watch program aims to prevent lives. The red watches worn by group of students (after they are given training on how to address the alcohol emergencies) are symbols that they are being watched over by their friends; they will not allow friends to succumb alcohol intoxiation.

The program so far has positive responses and the organizers believe it should reduce the binge drinking problem from college if not eliminate it totally.
