Breastfeeding lowers moms risk of developing type 2 diabetes

There is no substitute to breast milk to an infant, and in fact breast milk is billed as complete food for the baby. Breastfeeding alone can save as many as 900 babies every year. Aside the multitude of benefits that breastfeeding offer to the babies, include lowering risk of asthma, ear infections and gastrointestinal related illnesses, respiratory infections, etc. Breastfeeding also does a whole lot of good to the moms including reducing risk of developing breast, endometrial and uterine cancers. A new research now says that the breastfeeding reduces moms’ risk for developing type 2 diabetes too.

Protecting mothers against developing type 2 diabetes. A study that was published in The American Journal of Medicine, says that moms with zero breastfeeding experience are at 1.4 times higher risk to develop type 2 diabetes.

The study also says that the risk of developing type 2 diabetes in those moms who breast fed all of their children for about 1 month or longer is as much the same to those women who never gave birth- implying longer the duration of breastfeeding lower the risk of developing diabetes.

Breastfeeding helps moms shed off extra pounds relatively faster and so lowers risk of developing type 2 diabetes by improving the glucose metabolism, and increasing sensitivity to insulin and also by reducing the belly fat. One more reason to substantiate why ‘breast is the best.’
