Fatty diet during puberty associated with risk of breast cancer

High-fat diet during the puberty age may have risk of breast cancer say the findings of collaborative study by Michigan State University’s Breast Cancer and Environment Research Center.
According to the Director of the center and Physiology Professor Sandra Haslam, and Microbiology Professor and Associate Dean of the College of Natural Science, Richard Schwartz, are doing a follow up of preliminary research findings.
The Physiology Professor says that puberty is a crucial time period and body frame work for growth and development of mammary glands gets created during this time and a high-fat diet at this time could result in excess production of inflammatory products within the mammary glands, which in turn promote growth of tumor cells.
The team has studied the same in mice, and their work was a follow up of initial study involving progesterone and its risk of breast cancer. Progesterone promotes the gene/s that boosts the production of inflammatory products in the mammary glands which could be a risk factor of breast cancer.
Following the same principle researchers found that fat-rich diet during the puberty time could be a risk factor for breast cancer.
Either progesterone or high-fat diet as the inflammatory changes occur during a time when there is intense cell division and multiplication, the effects can be longer lasting.
Haslam and Schwartz teams will take further research with anti inflammation interventions which may help overcome the effects of high-fat diet on inflammation of mammary glands during puberty.
