India becomes fake drugs manufacturing hub

World leader generic drugs manufacturing, India is notoriously becoming a hub for fake drugs manufacturing, officials said.

According to a Washington Post report, fake drugs with genuine-looking package and labels and names of companies including Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline and Novartis are sold in India and some developing countries around the world.

Investigator, Suresh Sati, (who is also head of a private agency that assists authorities in nabbing fake drug making syndicates in India) said pointing at the confiscated drugs in his office at New Delhi, “they look real, but all these are fakes. A regular customer cannot make out if a drug is fake. The biggest giveaway is when someone is selling medicines very cheap. It is almost always fake.”

According to experts the counterfeit drug industry across the world is about $90 billions worth, and the industry is responsible in about a million deaths every year besides contributing to increase in drug resistance among people.

Laws were made to life sentence those pleading guilty of making or selling counterfeit drugs, but from the extent its spread its become an uphill task for authorities to nab the culprits.
