India to become diabetics’ capital of the world

According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), Brussels, India to have most diabetes patients in the world; a projected 50.8 million diabetics by 2010. The figure makes India diabetics’ capital of the world.

The federation says that the number is expected to rise to about 87 million which makes 8.4 per cent of India’s adult population diabetic by 2030.

At present 7 per cent Indian adults are diabetic and the metabolic disorder occurs chiefly due to sedentary lifestyle, bad diet habits and also high amounts of mental stress.

China, is second to India and currently has 43.2 million reported diabetics and the number is projected to go up to 62.6 million by 2030.

According to IDF, more than 1 million people will succumb to the disease by next year and among them women will be 58 per cent.

World wide the diabetics’ number increased from 30 million way back in ‘85 to 150 million by 2000. The projected number for 2010 is 285 million and will touch 435 million mark by 2030.
