Johnson & Johnson recalls 100000 boxes of contact lenses sold in Asia and Europe

Consumer healthcare products manufacturing behemoth Johnson & Johnson recalls its contact lenses brand from Asia and Europe. The recall of lenses was issued because of eye irritation complaints. On Monday, August 23, 2010 issued the recall of lenses of about 100,000 boxes containing either 30 or 90 pieces in a box of the 1 Day Acuvue TruEye™ brand lenses made in Ireland that were traded to countries in Asia and Europe.
In fact, the most complaints have come from Japan and none came from either US or Canada. The Japanese customers who bought the 1 Day Acuvue TruEye™ had complaints including stinging or pain on putting the lens.
The Johnson & Johnson company spokesman, Gary Esterow, said that the issue was due to failure of equipment during lens rinsing, and so a material that was supposed to be rinsed off hasn’t happened completely.
Unfortunately, for Johnson & Johnson, the 1 Day Acuvue TruEye™ happens to be the 9th consumer product that a recall was issued by the company this year.
Previous 8 recalls were for non-prescription meds in US which include pain relievers, children’s Tylenol and cold meds (children and adults). Considering all recalls, the company must be experiencing enormous pressure in overseeing the quality of manufacturing of the consumer healthcare products.
