Does oral contraceptive pill (or the pill) increases breast cancer risk? Yes, says a study made by US researchers involving women (African-American descent) who were on oral contraceptive pills. The women showed increased breast cancer risk.
Lynn Rosenberg, Epidemology Professor, Boston University Medical Center and Associate Director of Slone Epidemology Center lead the study. The research team took data collected by BWHS (Black Women’s Health Study) and studied about 53,848 women who were participants of the BWHS study for 12 years.
About 789 women developed breast cancer during the time. Lynn team reports that that estrogen receptor negative cancer among these women was 65% greater than those who have not used the pills. The researchers say that the breast cancer risk was most in those who used OCPs in the last 5 years (use lasting for 10 years and longer).
The study of Lynn et al., was published in the Journal of Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers and Prevention.
