Prostate hormone therapy increases death risk?

According to American researchers, prostate hormone therapy in those prostate cancer patients with heart ailments such as CHF or heart attacks increase risk of death in them.

While hormone therapy is being advocated and quite successful for prostate shrinkage or cytoreduction of prostate cancer, it could actually prove risky in people who had suffered from heart ailments.

According to Dr. Akash Nanda of Brigham & Women’s Hospital Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, their study involving 5,077 men who had localized prostate cancer in the advanced stages and who received prostate hormone therapy which is followed by radiation treatment between years 1997-2006, and then followed up until last July, revealed 419 men to have died (200 of these men had no other diagnosable conditions while 176 men had some risk of underlying coronary artery disease and 43 men had previous history of known CAD.

Dr. Akash Nanda’s study came in the Journal of the American Medical Association and the study reported a positive correlation between death risk and heart ailments in those men who received prostate hormone therapy.
