Sexually transmitted infections at record high in UK

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) in UK reported alarming stats; the sexually transmitted infection rates in UK at record high.

British media reported that the most infected rates were seen in the 15-24 age group.

According to the 2009 HPA data on STI distribution women were at greater risk of getting sexually transmitted diseases. There were about 482,696 new STD cases reported in 2009 which is 3% higher than 2008 figures and the trend seems to be only northing when compared to last 10 years figures.

The Chlamydia infections rose by 7% as compared to 2008 figures and gonorrhea increased by 6% in 2009.

The figures depict that sexual health has been a serious problem among young men that opt to have sex with men according to head of the STI at HPA, Gwenda Hughes.

STI re-infections have also been worrisome according to Dr. Gwenda, and she says that almost 10% of young adults (15-24 years) diagnosed with STIs will be diagnosed with re-infections sooner. She reiterates that the youngsters are not only putting their lives at risk from the STIs but also of others

The rate of sexually transmitted infections is particularly high in larger cities such as London and in people who have multiple sex partners (as in swingers) and homosexuals.
