Can psychologists change sexual orientation? No, say psychologists who met at a congregation in Toronto, Canada. The psychologists who met there reiterated that mental health practitioners should refrain from saying that they can change people’s orientation towards sexuality.
On the contrary, the American Psychological Association (APA) said in a resolution that parents and/or guardians, of young adults should refrain from seeking any treatments for changing sexual orientation and also refrain from portraying homosexuality as some kind of a mental disorder.
Furthermore, they say that people could go and seek psychotherapy with social support as well as educational services; however, accurate information should be the parameter to check to see services regarding orientation on sexuality. This can reduce the feel of rejection of the sexual minority in social groups, say the resolution.
All this has been approved by council of the representations of the APA at the recent convention in Toronto, Canada.
