David Shepherd the entertaining cricket umpire dies

Legendary English umpire David Shepherd dies on Wednesday after battling long with cancer.

Shepherd was 68 and his career spanned for over 22 years between 1983 and 2005. He is survived by his wife whom he married last year.

David Shepherd takes the credit of officiating in about 172 ODI matches and 92 test matches. He shares a rare distinction of officiating 3 World Cup Finals consecutively. Incidentally, his debut had been in the 1983 World Cup. Before foraying into umpiring Shepherd played for Gloucestershire county.

Shepherd was widely regarded as the best umpires of his time and an entertaining person on the field. He is known for his superstition of standing on one leg when score reached 111 or multiples of it. The number, Nelson is supposedly an unlucky one for the English.
