Reigning US Open champion Roger Federer who had never lost US Open had to lose the mens singles title for once to underdog Juan Martin Del Potro in what had been a dramatic rain-delayed and stretched five-set finals.
Del Potro won over Roger Federer 3-6, 7-6(5), 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-2 ruining Federer’s dreams to lift the 6th straight US Open title. This also becomes first Grand Slam title to the Argentine. There has been increasing pressure and hope on Del Potro but the 20-year-old could carry it amazingly well.
Federer started here as a pre-match favorite only to have a stunning defeat in the hands of the Argentine. The match had started late with rains lashing at the Flushing Meadows and fans have had to wait endlessly for about 4 hours for the rains to stop and match to resume.
Roger looked strong but he lost calm and does a Serena by yelling at the chair umpire and talking displeased. He never looked composed although he wasn’t penalized the way Serena was. But there seems to be an outcry as to why Federer got away, and why he should not. Is it that the gentle game of tennis slowly losing its class and gentile nature?
Ah! Whatever it be, the irony is that Federer loses US Open 2009 mens singles yet he is the number one!
As usual the presentation ceremony saw Federer crying and saying, “a stressful match but a great game.”
