14 days of the journey through the US Open Womens singles ended with the comeback mom Kim Clijsters winning it.
It’s not all that easy to travel many thousand miles along with baby and playing in front of the tennis crazy crowd at the Flushing Meadows, New York, she admits. But the former US Open Champion and Belgian tennis pro proved she could do beyond her own expectations.
Unseeded, 26-year-old Kim Clijsters becomes first player ever to win US Open singles title after coming here with a wild card. She equaled Jimmy Connors when she came to Semi-Finals but she proves she is better than Connors by winning here at the Flushing Meadows in 2 straight sets 7-5 and 6-3 over Caroline Wozniacki. She keept herself cool off nerves that she Kim was able to play better off than the teen sensation from Denmark, Caroline Wozniacki. Kim definitely was more agile and flexible (thanks to her inheritance from father who had been a soccer player and mother who was a gymnast) than even the teen ace.
For Caroline too, the Flushing Meadows has been a happy hunting ground. She had never gone past 4th round before but now played first Grand Slam finals in her career. She thanked in English, Danish and Polish to all her people back home who have been pouring in great support for her throughout.
Kim Clijsters becomes the second mom after Evonne Googalong (who won in 1980) to win any Grand Slam title.
Clijsters dominated from the beginning of the match, but it had been great to see another fighter in Wozniacki, I believe she is another great add to the pool of women fighters in the world of tennis. She was equally amazing.
But the day clearly belonged to Kim Clijsters who won here way back in 2005 and then took off for a break to start her family and now with a wild card she’s indeed become the US Open 2009 winner and a champ mom. She admitted saying she started playing only to come to the rhythm of playing tennis but never expected that she’d do this well here.
She acknowledged the crowd support and also praised the fighter in her Danish opponent Caroline Wozniacki. Finishing touch Kim’s young daughter Jada shouting Mama on her mother’s last winning drop volley. The family celebrated without hesitation (after Kim was abandoned to celebrate her win to finals against Serena the other day when the finish hadn’t been the way it should have been). Well done Kim! You have not only stunned by your comeback but have given loads of inspiration to all working mothers!
