The WWII prison camp goes for sale on Tuesday (September 29, 2009) at online auction store eBay. Lately, strange things for sale pop up at eBay but when Britain’s World War II prison camp came up as a listing at eBay, it was more than a shocker for many.
The owners of the Harperley PoW camp, James and Lisa McLeod, an elderly couple; however, justify their intent. They seem to be running out of money as they try to make the wartime memorial or the Harperley PoW camp into an education retreat.
The Harperley PoW camp is a 17-acre property and is located near Crook in the Durham County, and has about 50 homes, in the backdrop of lush green meadows, a chapel, a theater, and an eatery. The owners James and Lisa McLeod share that they have been running it as a tourist attraction for 5 years now and admitted to have spent around £1m to make the prison camp as an education center.
The PoW camp has been listed in eBay as a unique leisure attraction with an asking price of £900k (approximately $1.4m). This Prisoner of War camp has a history of housing several German as well as Italian prisoners during the WWII that spread between 1939 and 1945. Until 1944 Italian PoWs stayed in the houses here and then Germans have been transported to the camp.
The listing about the PoW reads, “A unique opportunity to buy a piece of history” and it’s been placed on Tuesday at eBay. It further reads, “strictly no viewing without an appointment.”
