Founding fathers of stem cells- frontrunners for Nobel Prize in Medicine

The Canadian researchers who discovered the stem cells long back which paved way for a lot of research in medicine, will be the frontrunners for the 2009 Nobel prize in Medicine. The two are regarded as fathers of stem cell research.

Drs. Ernest McCulloch and James Till have been the pioneers of stem cell research, and they have won Lasker Award in 2005 for the same. The Lasker award is regarded as American Nobel.

It was in the early 70s that the two researchers identified the regenerative capacity in the stem cells. And. due to the regenerative capabilities, stem cells offer scope of replacing damaged tissues and organs in medicine and offer scope to treat conditions including Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and even heart diseases.
