Forbes lists Barack Obama as the world’s most powerful person

Forbes Magazine lists US President Barack Obama as the world’s most powerful man. Forbes magazine today released world’s most powerful people and Obama tops the list of world’s most powerful people.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is third most powerful man, the Vatican Pope Benedict XVI is the 11th most powerful, Mike Duke (Wal-Mart CEO) is the 8th most powerful and media superstar Oprah Winfrey the 45th most powerful.

Forbes compiled the list of World’s Most Powerful People for the first time. The editors were asked to compile based on their studies if the person can influence others, the financial resources he can have control on and also studied if a person was powerful in several spheres.

Forbes made a list of 67 world’s most powerful people with an equation of 1:100 million. Here’s is the list of top 10 world’s most powerful people:

US health insurance bill passes

In what had been branded as a landmark win for the US President Barack Obama, the health insurance bill passes .

The Democrat-controlled House passed the healthcare bill so it increases cover to many citizens who are hitherto not covered however, put newer restrictions on existent insurance industry.

According to the new legislation, Americans who hitherto could not afford to will get insurance as well as subsidies. Besides companies should offer cover to employees. Furthermore, there will be penalty on consumers as well as companies should they breach the government mandate.

Thanks to the bill, insurance companies now cannot levy heavy premium on gender bias and based on a person’s past medical history.

But there had been some moments of anxiousness for the bill to get passed by the House. The vote had been a 220 to 215. Joseph Cao, La, a Republican voted pro for the measure and 39 Democrats voted against.

President Barack Obama applauded the House for passing the health insurance bill. He was quoted of saying that he is “absolutely confident” about Senate passing the legislation.

Obama remarks he looks forward to signing the legislation into the law by 2009.

H1N1 is a National Emergency- Obama Declares

US President, Barack Obama declared swine flu or H1N1 as the National Emergency. According to a statement from White House, Obama signed the declaration. This move will be to assist the nation for better preparedness in case there is an increasing spread of the H1N1 virus infection across US.

World Health Organization had already declared swine flu or H1N1 as pandemic. According to reports about 1000 succumbed to the virus in US and 46 states reported infection. The declaration comes in the wake of fear that the H1N1 virus might spread faster in the winter months. The virus claimed more than 5000 reported deaths across the world and more than 400k people were tested positive so far.

President Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize

US President Barack Obama won 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.

Obama wins the most prestigious award in less than an year of taking office. The US President was awarded Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to bolster international diplomacy putting aside unilateralism and strengthen cooperation between Muslim and non-Muslim nations.

The President was quoted of saying, “I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many transformative figures that have been honored by this prize.”

Rio wins the bid to host 2016 Olympics

It’s now declared that Rio de Janeiro, Brazil will be hosting 2016 Olympics after a landslide victory against its closest competitor, Madrid, on Friday in the last round of voting.

Before that, the International Olympic Committee (ICC) members gave shock to one and all by kicking out Chicago, supposedly the favorite, in the very first round of the voting. Tokyo got the next call out and IOC had good support to Rio making it first ever city in South America to host the big Game. The final voting saw Rip edge out by 66 votes to 32 received in favor of Madrid.

Already Brazil is in preparations to host already preparing to host the World Cup Soccer 2014 and this winning only added to the joy of the people of Brazil and Rio in particular. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was seen in tears of joy as soon as the announcement was made by IOC president Jacques Rogge.

However, Chicago seemed to be shocked at the announcement and it polled just 18 votes in first round; despite great speeches on behalf of Chicago by the President Barack Obama and the First Lady Michelle Obama at the IOC session. In fact, Obama became the first US President to address the IOC session.

Barack Obama Tours Eiffel Tower- His wax figure is unveiled to public

Barack Obama’s wax statue figures alongside Valdimir Putin and Angela Merkel at the very popular Musee Grevin Wax Museum, Paris.

US President Barack Obama immortalized in wax again this time by sculptor Eric Saint Chaffray who had been the man behind wax statues at Musee Grevin Wax Museum, Paris for over 20 years.

Chaffray worked on Barack Obama’s statue by seeing his photos and not meeting him. Obama dressed in dark suit features graying as well but with stiff body language, maybe perfect for a person like US President. The statue of Obama toured the Eiffel Tower before it found place along the likes of Valdimir Putin, Anegela Merkel, and Nicolas Sarkozy. In fact, the scorching sun prompted helpers to carry the statue to Eiffel Tower under an umbrella.

Same-sex partners to get fed benefits

US President, Barack Obama has been coming under continuous criticism for not resorting to terminate ban on the gays in US military. The Federal government now comes up with another solution for the same; providing perks to the same-sex partners amongst federal employees.

According to a White House Official, the Obama government will be announcing the decision on Wednesday in the Oval Office although the President had not signed trhe memorandum as yet. We can expect more details on Wednesday.

Many gay fundraisers have taken off support from the Democratic National Committee event on June 25 wherein Vice President Joe Biden is expected to speak about the marriage act. The Obama administration though tried to make moves in extending benefits to gays and lesbians. The State Department offered several benefits including diplomatic passports as well as language training to the gay men and women diplomat partners.

The current move by Obama government will be cheered by gay and lesbian activists, as June happens to be gay pride season.
