iPhone app iStethoscope to relace iconic stethoscope

Doctors who for long used the iconic stethoscope to listen to heartbeat of patients have started ditching it in favor of an iPhone app a virtual stethoscope.

The iPhone app named an iStethoscope is a $1.19 iPhone application that has been downloaded over 3 million times in UK along is an iPhone medical app with inbuilt microphone to assist doctors to monitor heart beat of the patients.

The doctor can hold his iPhone against patient’s chest, and then shakes the iphone to see a graphic which depicts the patient’s heartbeat.

In fact, the best thing about the iStethoscope app is that it also gives a play back of the previous 8 seconds of heartbeat recording, thus can be a handy tool in the hands of every physician, aiding to improve healthcare in ways not imagined earlier, according to creator of the iStethoscope Peter Bentley.

Bentley believes that in future the app can be modified so it can be an ultrasound scanner or blood pressure monitor. There is a free version of the iPhone that Bentley created and it is downloaded at an amazing rate of 500 a day.
