Samsung Electronics will start large scale production of melting memory chips

While memory chips may not be very exciting, the technology that is entailed here might be of interest to nerds. According to Samsung Electronics these are specialty chips called the melting memory chips wherein data is stored by melting and/or freezing crystals.

Termed as PCM technology (phase change memory) the idea though is nearly 50 years old, but took long for scientists to develop the memory chip. Researchers now believe that use of PCM principle in memory chips could revolutionize mobile phone technology.

PCM is based on the simple concept that neatly arranged atoms could be great when it comes to conduction of electrons.

In the traditional memory chips, the electrons are in motion around chip; however, in PCM chips the data/electrons are frozen in a specific location. Which implies the device/s could be instantly switched on. As PCM technology doesn’t depend on charge, it could be used in the creation of very small devices and soon they could appear in mobile phone technology. In this context Samsung Electronics announces large scale production production of melting memory chips.
